No Longer Strangers!

Last monthly blog?!? This is crazy. I thought my title was appropriate because we read The Stranger but it's the end of the year so we're not actually strangers to the idea of these blogs anymore. Anyway...

This month we read The Stranger which discusses (in simple language- maybe as a result of the translation from French, maybe because it was meant to be simplistic) the story of a man who loses his mother, and ends up in jail for killing a man.

The reason the protagonist in this story is so widely discussed is because he does not react to situations in the way society expects him to react. In the very beginning, Meursault's mother dies. When he goes to the funeral, he is not crying and he does not mourn for several days afterwards. In fact, the next day he goes on a date and then continues with his normal life. He strays from the norm of society when he acts this way.

In the same way today, people are judged if they do not act a certain way during a certain situation. People are expected to follow certain trends if they are a certain age or gender, so they follow those trends. Just because society sets certain expectations through the media and other forms of communication does not mean everyone has to abide by these expectations. Everyone is individual and should react to all situations naturally.

And because we're graduating and this is my last AP English monthly blog ever, a sentimental quote:

"Don't cry because it's over, smile because it happened." - Dr. Seuss
